The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly re-entered talks to bring back, a 31-year-old standout reliever and fan favorite. According to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, the Phillies are keen to retain Hoffman in his familiar high-leverage bullpen role, despite rumors that other teams are considering transitioning the free agent right-hander back into a starting role.
Hoffman’s journey to becoming a premier reliever began with a pivotal move to the bullpen in 2021 during his time with the Reds. Since then, he has emerged as a reliable late-inning option, thriving in Philadelphia over the past two seasons. In 2023-24, Hoffman posted a sparkling 2.28 ERA, a 33.4% strikeout rate, and a 7.4% walk rate across 118 2/3 innings of regular-season work.
However, his 2024 postseason performance was mixed. After a stellar 2023 playoff campaign, Hoffman struggled against the Mets in the 2024 NLDS, leading to speculation about his future role.
Hoffman’s market value is surging after a career renaissance, with his representatives at CAA likely eyeing deals comparable to the three-year, $38 million contract that Clay Holmes secured with the Mets. Notably, some clubs are exploring the idea of utilizing Hoffman as a starter, a role he hasn’t held since 2021. This potential shift could drive up his market value even further, with MLB Trade Rumors projecting a four-year, $44 million deal for Hoffman as a reliever.
Despite the allure of a potential starting role and a higher payday elsewhere, Philadelphia offers Hoffman the opportunity to continue competing for a title in a city where he’s thrived. Hoffman has expressed his affinity for pitching in Philadelphia, which could tilt the scales in the Phillies’ favor.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski recently acknowledged the team’s interest in re-signing Hoffman but noted financial constraints:
“We like them both, but I don’t see us spending that type of money on two relievers in our bullpen,” Dombrowski said, referring to Hoffman and fellow free agent Carlos Estevez.
While the Yankees are among the teams pursuing Estevez, the Phillies seem inclined to prioritize Hoffman. His familiarity with the team and proven track record in relief could make him a cornerstone of the Phillies’ bullpen in 2025. For now, the decision lies with Hoffman as he weighs his options in an increasingly competitive market.
