Good News: Mets Officially Agreed to a Two-Year Deal With the $73 Million Superstar to Bolster Carlos Mendoza’s World Series Dreams…

The New York Mets made a significant move in free agency Sunday evening, fortifying their starting rotation with the addition of veteran right-hander Frankie Montas.

As reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Mets and Montas have agreed to a two-year, $34 million contract, pending a physical. The 31-year-old brings nine seasons of MLB experience to Queens and aims to make a big impact in his second stint pitching in New York.

Montas began the 2024 season with the Cincinnati Reds but was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline. Across 30 starts last season, he posted a 4.84 ERA with 148 strikeouts over 150 2/3 innings.

This isn’t Montas’s first time pitching under the bright lights of New York. He previously spent parts of two seasons with the Yankees, though injuries limited him to just nine appearances during his tenure. Before that, he enjoyed a productive six-year run with the Oakland Athletics, establishing himself as a reliable arm.

The Mets’ aggressive offseason isn’t stopping here. They remain in hot pursuit of star free-agent outfielder Juan Soto, the crown jewel of this year’s free-agent class. While Soto remains their top target, securing Montas demonstrates the team’s commitment to addressing all areas of need as they build around new manager Carlos Mendoza’s vision for a championship-caliber roster.

Montas’s signing could be a pivotal move for the Mets as they look to compete for the franchise’s first World Series title since 1986.
