The San Francisco 49ers are reeling from a significant blow as they officially lose one of their key players in free agency. Star defensive tackle, a vital piece of the team’s defensive line, has signed a lucrative deal elsewhere, leaving a major void in Kyle Shanahan’s roster. The loss of Kinlaw, who earned $16.4 million in his final season with the 49ers, represents a significant challenge for a team with championship aspirations.
Kinlaw, 26, was a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and developed into a reliable presence in the trenches for San Francisco. In 2024, he posted career-best numbers with 49 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks, anchoring a defensive line that was among the league’s most formidable. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses made him a cornerstone of the 49ers’ defensive strategy.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the departure, expressing disappointment but also resolve. “It’s always tough to lose a player like Javon,” Shanahan said. “He’s a tremendous talent and a big part of what we’ve built here. That said, we’re confident in our ability to adjust and find ways to compete at the highest level.”
The 49ers’ front office had reportedly hoped to retain Kinlaw, but budget constraints and the star defender’s rising market value ultimately made a deal unfeasible. His new team, rumored to have offered a contract in the range of $80 million over four years, outbid San Francisco’s offer.
For the 49ers, the focus now shifts to finding a replacement, either through the draft, free agency, or internal development. The team boasts a deep defensive roster, but Kinlaw’s departure leaves a gap that won’t be easy to fill.
Fans are understandably disappointed, taking to social media to voice their frustration and gratitude for Kinlaw’s contributions. One fan wrote, “Heartbreaking to lose him, but wishing Javon the best. He gave everything to this team.”
As the offseason progresses, Shanahan and the 49ers must navigate this setback and ensure their defense remains a force to be reckoned with in the 2025 season.
