The New York Mets have made a major splash in free agency, agreeing to a five-year, $182 million deal with three-time All-Star pitcher. The move solidifies the Mets’ rotation with a proven ace and demonstrates the team’s commitment to returning to postseason contention in 2025.
Snell, 31, is coming off a stellar 2024 season in which he posted a league-best 2.25 ERA, struck out 227 batters in 185 innings, and finished as a runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award. His second trip to free agency was highly anticipated, as he entered the market as one of the most sought-after pitchers following his success with the San Diego Padres.
“This is a huge day for the Mets,” said general manager David Stearns. “Blake Snell is one of the most dominant pitchers in the game, and his track record speaks for itself. Adding a player of his caliber gives us the opportunity to compete at the highest level.”
Snell, who won the 2018 American League Cy Young Award with the Tampa Bay Rays and another in 2023 with the Padres, brings a wealth of experience and big-game prowess to the Mets. Over his nine-year career, Snell has compiled a 3.24 ERA and struck out over 1,500 batters, proving himself as one of the elite arms in baseball.
The Mets, who underperformed in 2024, are looking to retool their roster to complement stars Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo. Snell joins a rotation that already includes Kodai Senga and could see further additions in the coming weeks.
