The New York Mets have bolstered their rotation in a big way, officially announcing the acquisition of three-time All-Star pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners in a four-player trade proposal.
With a clear need to reinforce their starting rotation after key departures, Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has fulfilled his offseason goal of landing a proven ace. Castillo brings a stellar track record and financial stability, making him an ideal addition to New York’s pitching staff as they aim to contend in 2025.
Castillo’s Impressive Credentials
Luis Castillo has established himself as one of the most consistent and durable starters in baseball. Since 2018, the right-hander has made at least 25 starts in every full season, including five campaigns with 30 or more starts. Over that span, he has amassed a 70-69 record with a 3.59 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 1,233 strikeouts across 1,140 2/3 innings.
Under contract through 2027 via a five-year, $108 million extension, Castillo will earn $24.15 million annually from 2025-27, with a $25 million vesting option for 2028. His reliability and affordable contract make him a cornerstone addition to the Mets’ rotation.
The Trade Details
The deal involves a significant haul for the Mariners:
- Mets receive: RHP Luis Castillo
- Mariners receive: INF Ronny Mauricio, INF Luisangel Acuña, RHP Nolan McLean
Mauricio, ranked sixth among Mets prospects by MLB.com, and Acuña, ranked 12th, bring MLB-ready offensive potential to Seattle. Nolan McLean, ranked ninth, adds a promising arm to their farm system. While losing these prospects is a steep price, it secures New York an elite starter for years to come.
Mets’ Rotation Reloaded
With Castillo headlining the rotation, the Mets have taken a major step toward addressing the gaps left by the departures of Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana. Castillo’s presence ensures stability and star power as New York eyes another deep playoff run.
While this trade was hypothetical just days ago, the Mets have officially turned speculation into reality, securing one of the game’s best arms to anchor their pitching staff.
