As the New York Mets remain deeply involved in the Juan Soto free agency sweepstakes, team president David Stearns faces another pressing issue the potential departure of slugger Pete Alonso. With Alonso testing free agency, the Mets must prepare for the possibility of finding a new first baseman to anchor their lineup.
While free-agent options like Christian Walker and Paul Goldschmidt offer traditional solutions, the Mets might consider a more creative approach. This includes signing a player like Alex Bregman or Willy Adames to play third base while shifting Mark Vientos to first. However, addressing the need through the trade market could bring an even bigger splash.
One intriguing trade target is Chicago Cubs outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger. Despite signing a three-year, $80 million deal with the Cubs last offseason, Bellinger has reportedly drawn interest from other clubs, including the Mets. While Bellinger has expressed a desire to stay in Chicago, the Cubs might be open to moving him if the right offer comes along.
FanSided’s Joshua Ambroise suggests that Bellinger would be an ideal replacement for Alonso if the Mets opt for a trade. The 2019 NL MVP slashed .266/.325/.426 with 18 home runs, 23 doubles, 78 RBIs, and 72 runs scored in 2024. While Bellinger’s power numbers are a step down from Alonso’s, he brings versatility, a solid defensive reputation, and postseason experience.
“Bellinger even understands the tasks of handling the big market teams,” Ambroise noted. “Before he was a Cub, Cody spent six seasons in a Dodgers uniform. He won multiple honors, including NL Rookie of the Year, NLCS MVP, NL MVP, and a World Series championship. Handling another big-market team like New York shouldn’t pose a problem, as history has shown.”
If the Mets land Soto, it could limit their financial flexibility to retain Alonso, potentially making a trade for Bellinger more attractive. The combination of Soto and Bellinger would bring star power and balance to the lineup, even if Alonso’s prodigious home run production is hard to replace.
With the Mets aiming to compete for a title in 2024, Stearns has a critical decision ahead. Whether Alonso stays or goes, Bellinger’s track record and skill set make him a compelling option to help the Mets maintain their offensive firepower.
