Houston Astros manager Joe Espada has provided clarity on the team’s potential plans for the 2025 season as speculation grows about star third baseman Alex Bregman’s future. With Bregman testing free agency, the Astros face a critical decision about how to replace his presence at the hot corner if he signs elsewhere.
Bregman, a cornerstone of Houston’s success for nearly a decade, played a pivotal role in the Astros’ 2024 campaign, slashing .286/.367/.512 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs. However, with several teams reportedly courting the two-time All-Star, the Astros are bracing for the possibility of a post-Bregman era.
Espada on Bregman’s Importance
“Alex has been the heart and soul of this team for years,” Espada said in a press conference. “He’s a leader on and off the field, and his consistency has been key to our success. That said, baseball is a business, and we have to prepare for all possibilities.”
The Backup Plan
If Bregman departs, the Astros are exploring several contingency options to fill the void at third base. Among the internal candidates are rising star Grae Kessinger and versatile infielder Mauricio Dubón. Both players showed flashes of potential in 2024 and could step into a larger role in 2025.
Houston is also expected to consider external options, with potential free agents and trade targets being closely monitored. Names like Eugenio Suárez and Matt Chapman have surfaced as possible replacements, offering proven experience at the position. Additionally, the Astros’ farm system boasts intriguing prospects, including Jacob Melton, who could factor into the team’s long-term plans.
Espada’s Confidence in the 2025 Astros
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Bregman’s future, Espada expressed confidence in the Astros’ ability to remain competitive.
“We’ve built a culture of resilience and adaptability,” Espada said. “Our core group—players like José Altuve, Yordan Álvarez, and Kyle Tucker—ensures we’ll have a strong foundation no matter what.”
Bregman’s Legacy in Houston
Espada also took a moment to acknowledge Bregman’s legacy with the Astros.
“Alex has been a huge part of this team’s identity,” he said. “If this is the end of his time in Houston, he’ll always be remembered as one of the greats.”
As the offseason progresses, the Astros remain focused on constructing a lineup capable of continuing their championship aspirations, with or without their longtime third baseman.
