The Philadelphia Phillies have taken a significant step toward shoring up their roster for 2025, officially announcing a one-year deal with Garrett Stubbs to return as the team’s backup catcher. While the offseason chatter has centered on addressing outfield and bullpen needs, the backup catcher position quietly emerged as a critical area of focus, especially with J.T. Realmuto expected to see reduced playing time next season.
Clarity at Catcher
Stubbs has been a reliable presence behind the plate for the Phillies over the past three seasons. Although his 2024 offensive numbers—hitting .222 with a .558 OPS—lagged behind the league average for catchers (.678 OPS), his defensive skills remain a strong asset. The signing ensures Stubbs will be part of the mix heading into Spring Training, though he’ll likely face competition for the backup role.
Internal Options
Rafael Marchan, another strong candidate for the role, showed promise in limited Major League action last season, slashing .294/.345/.549 in 56 plate appearances. While his .811 OPS at the big-league level is impressive, it’s based on a small sample size, and his injury history adds uncertainty. Marchan’s .611 OPS in the minors offers a more tempered perspective on his offensive upside.
Both Stubbs and Marchan excel defensively, a factor Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski highlighted. “Defensively, we’ve done very well. I don’t have any concerns about that,” Dombrowski said, emphasizing that the team values both internal candidates.
A Changing Role for Realmuto
With Realmuto turning 34 in March and coming off knee surgery that sidelined him for over a month in 2024, the Phillies are keen to manage his workload. By reducing his playing time, the backup catcher will take on a more pivotal role than in previous seasons. Manager Rob Thomson acknowledged this, saying, “We’ll put a plan together for Realmuto’s workload, but we’re keeping an open mind about who the backup will be.”
Marchan’s lack of remaining minor-league options could weigh into the decision-making process. Stubbs, who has one option left, offers roster flexibility if needed.
