New York Mets shortstop and two-time All-Star Francisco Lindor has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind. His latest remarks, however, have sent shockwaves through the baseball community. Addressing recent comments made by free agent slugger Juan Soto, who is reportedly in line for a historic $660 million deal, Lindor didn’t hold back, labeling Soto’s words as “pathetic” during a candid conversation with reporters.
Soto recently caused a stir by expressing frustration about the intense pressure and media scrutiny surrounding his free agency. While many fans and analysts sympathized with the 25-year-old superstar, Lindor had a starkly different perspective.
“Look, I get it. Being a free agent and having the spotlight on you isn’t easy,” Lindor said. “But let’s not pretend like this is a tragedy. If you’re in a position to sign a $660 million contract, the last thing you should be doing is complaining about it. It’s pathetic, to be honest. There are players out here grinding just for an opportunity.”
Lindor’s Perspective
Lindor, who signed a $341 million deal with the Mets in 2021, emphasized the privilege and responsibility that come with being one of the game’s elite players.
“We’re blessed to play this game and be compensated in ways most people can’t even imagine,” Lindor continued. “Instead of focusing on the negatives, focus on how you can set an example for the next generation. That’s what being a superstar is all about.”
Soto’s Potential Mets Link
The timing of Lindor’s comments has raised eyebrows, as the Mets are one of the leading contenders to sign Soto. Many are questioning whether Lindor’s remarks could impact the team’s pursuit of the four-time All-Star. However, Mets owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns have shown a willingness to navigate locker room dynamics in pursuit of star talent.
