The Vancouver Canucks announced Tuesday that star center will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team for personal reasons. The news was confirmed just hours before the Canucks’ morning skate, with general manager Patrik Allvin emphasizing the organization’s support for their standout player.
“Right now, our sole focus is making sure J.T. knows the entire organization is here to support him,” Allvin said. “Out of respect for J.T., we will have no further comment at this time.”
Miller, 31, has been a cornerstone of the Canucks since signing a seven-year, $56 million deal ahead of the 2019-20 season. That year, he played a key role in ending Vancouver’s four-year playoff drought. This season, Miller has maintained his reputation as a consistent producer, tallying 16 points in 17 games while logging heavy minutes despite playing through preseason and early-season injuries.
The leave follows a challenging week for Miller. On Sunday, he was benched for nearly 15 minutes during the third period of the Canucks’ 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators. Vancouver’s start to the season has been middling, with a 9-6-3 record placing them fifth in the Pacific Division after 18 games.
Miller’s absence leaves a significant void for the Canucks, both on and off the ice. Known for his fiery leadership and ability to contribute in all situations, Miller has been a driving force in Vancouver’s offense. His departure adds to the challenges facing a team already working to find consistency.

As the Canucks navigate this period without one of their top players, the organization and fanbase alike are rallying behind Miller, prioritizing his well-being above all else. While the timeline for his return remains uncertain, Miller’s impact on the team and community ensures he will be greatly missed.
