Ahead of today’s deadline to protect prospects from the Rule 5 Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies announced the addition of three highly regarded players to their 40-man roster: Mick Abel, Jean Cabrera, and Moises Chace. The move ensures these promising arms remain part of the organization as the team continues to build for the future.
Mick Abel
The headliner of this trio, Abel was the Phillies’ first-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. While his raw talent has always been evident, his 2023 season raised concerns. Pitching in Triple-A Lehigh Valley, the 22-year-old struggled with command and consistency, resulting in a 6.46 ERA. Despite these challenges, Abel’s electric stuff—highlighted by a high-90s fastball and a devastating slider—keeps him on the Phillies’ radar as a potential frontline starter. Protecting Abel signals the team’s continued belief in his ability to realize his considerable upside.
Jean Cabrera
Cabrera, 22, had a strong 2023 season across two levels, starting with High-A Clearwater and moving to Double-A Reading. In Clearwater, the right-hander posted a 3.39 ERA over 77 innings while striking out 29% of batters faced, showcasing impressive command. Though his numbers dipped in Reading (4.85 ERA), Cabrera’s development remains promising. The Phillies see him as a potential rotation option for 2024, with a chance to contribute at the Major League level.
Moises Chace
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the group, Chace turned heads after joining the Phillies in a trade that sent Gregory Soto to the Tigers. The 22-year-old flamethrower dazzled in Reading, striking out an eye-popping 45.5% of batters across 19 2/3 innings. Scouts have raved about his fastball-slider combination, and his performance has transformed him into a high-ceiling bullpen prospect. Adding Chace to the roster ensures the Phillies retain control over one of the most exciting arms in their system.
With these additions, the Phillies now have 39 players on their 40-man roster as they approach the non-tender deadline. These moves highlight the team’s commitment to developing homegrown talent while positioning themselves for future success.
