The Boston Bruins’ 2024-25 season has taken yet another turn for the worse. Following a 7-2 drubbing by the Dallas Stars last Thursday and a disappointing 3-2 overtime loss to a depleted St. Louis Blues team on Saturday, the Bruins sank to a new low Monday night with a crushing 5-1 defeat against the Columbus Blue Jackets at TD Garden.
This latest setback leaves the Bruins with a discouraging 8-9-3 record through 20 games, marking one of their worst starts in recent memory. With the season slipping away, changes may be inevitable if the team hopes to salvage their campaign.
A Dismal Start Against Columbus
The Bruins fell behind 3-0 after the first period in what can only be described as an abysmal performance. The opening goal came in bizarre fashion when defenseman Brandon Carlo collided with goalie Jeremy Swayman, inadvertently pushing the puck into the net. Things quickly unraveled from there.
Later in the first period, a careless Bruins power play turned into disaster when Mathieu Olivier scored a shorthanded goal, outmuscling Boston’s defense to make it 2-0. Former Bruin James van Riemsdyk piled on, scoring his third goal of the season in the final seconds of the period.
In the third period, the misery continued as the Bruins allowed yet another shorthanded goal. While Charlie Coyle’s power-play goal in the second period briefly gave fans a glimmer of hope, it was the lone bright spot in an otherwise forgettable night.
Columbus goaltender Elvis Merzlikins was stellar, stopping 29 of 30 shots to stifle Boston’s offense, while Swayman faced relentless pressure with little defensive support.
