The Philadelphia Phillies have made a bold move to address their bullpen woes by officially acquiring high-upside left-handed reliever Sean Guenther from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm. The trade, finalized early today, shakes up the Phillies’ roster while giving the Tigers a key offensive piece to bolster their lineup.
What Sean Guenther Brings to the Phillies
The Phillies’ bullpen struggled throughout the 2024 season, finishing with the sixth-fewest saves in MLB (37) and enduring costly blown saves during their playoff exit. Adding Sean Guenther provides a massive upgrade.
Guenther was lights out for the Tigers in 2024, boasting a 0.86 ERA, an eye-popping 0.524 WHIP, and 12 strikeouts across 21 innings. His performance in save situations was especially elite, limiting opponents to a .077 batting average and delivering dominant outings in high-pressure moments.
By bringing in Guenther, the Phillies not only secure a potential closer but also a versatile arm capable of excelling in the eighth inning, where his strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.0) was among the best in baseball. With Guenther anchoring the bullpen, Philadelphia addresses one of its most glaring weaknesses as it looks to build on a 95-67 campaign.
Phillies GM Sam Fuld expressed optimism about the acquisition:
“Sean has proven he’s one of the most effective relievers in the league, and we’re thrilled to add his talent to our bullpen. This move positions us to compete at the highest level in 2025.”
Why the Tigers Wanted Alec Bohm
In return, Detroit lands Alec Bohm, a highly productive and consistent run producer. Bohm drove in 97 runs in 2024, ranking 19th in MLB, and hit .288 with an xBA in the 95th percentile. His disciplined approach at the plate, highlighted by a strikeout rate in the 92nd percentile, makes him a valuable asset for a Tigers lineup that finished 15th in RBIs with runners in scoring position last season.
For Detroit, Bohm fits perfectly into the middle of their order, providing stability and a reliable bat to complement their developing core. Tigers GM Scott Harris noted, “Alec’s track record of clutch hitting and run production makes him an excellent addition to our lineup. This trade reflects our commitment to fielding a competitive team.”
