The New York Mets are no strangers to headline-grabbing moves, but their rumored $660 million offer to star free agent Juan Soto has sparked significant controversy and skepticism. The report, initially shared by MLB insider Héctor Gómez, claimed the Mets had presented Soto with the historic offer following a meeting with the 25-year-old superstar. However, less than 24 hours later, conflicting information has emerged.
MLB insider Robert Murray, speaking on the Baseball Insiders podcast, pushed back against the claim, stating:
“These meetings really are an introduction for Soto to meet the potential leadership groups of a team that could end up being with Soto for the next 10 to 15 years. I do not believe at this point that any financial offers have been made. This is just the beginning of the process.”
Timing and Skepticism
The alleged $660 million figure raised eyebrows not just for its size—potentially the largest contract in sports history—but also for its timing. Historically, top-tier free agents rarely receive formal offers this early in the offseason. In recent years, major signings like Shohei Ohtani (December 9), Aaron Judge (December 20), and others have come much later in the free-agency window.
Murray further fueled skepticism by asserting, “I can’t see a team coming out right away and offering $660 million. That would almost be too good to be true.”
