“I Deserve to Be Respected!”: I Can’t Continue to Stay Here as a Second Choice Player When I Know I Deserve Better Than What I Get, $210 Million Top Star Officially Accept Terms to Join Mets On…

After months of speculation, Corbin Burnes, one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason, has officially agreed to join the New York Mets on a blockbuster seven-year, $210 million deal. The 30-year-old ace leaves behind a short yet impactful stint with the Baltimore Orioles, where he voiced frustrations about his role and treatment within the organization.

In an emotional statement during his free agency, Burnes didn’t hold back. “I deserve to be respected! I can’t continue to stay here as a second-choice player when I know I deserve better than what I get,” he said, alluding to feeling undervalued despite being one of the premier pitchers in the league.

Burnes’ 2024 season cemented his status as an elite arm, finishing with a 2.84 ERA, a league-leading 240 strikeouts, and a dominant presence that helped the Orioles reach new heights. Yet, the team’s inability—or unwillingness—to lock him into a long-term deal left Burnes exploring his options.

A Perfect Fit with the Mets

The New York Mets swooped in with a massive offer, guided by President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, who worked with Burnes during their time together with the Milwaukee Brewers. Burnes’ addition bolsters a Mets rotation aiming to compete at the highest level after falling short in the NLCS in 2024.

“Burnes was our priority from day one of the offseason,” Stearns said. “He’s not only one of the best pitchers in baseball but also someone who thrives in high-pressure situations—exactly the type of player we want to build around.”

Owner Steve Cohen, known for his aggressive spending, once again demonstrated his commitment to building a championship roster. With Burnes now in the fold, the Mets continue to position themselves as a top contender for the 2025 season.

As for Burnes, the move represents a fresh start and an opportunity to lead a franchise that values him as its ace. “I’m ready to win,” Burnes said. “The Mets believe in me, and I can’t wait to bring a championship to New York.”
