Francisco Lindor is doubling down on his efforts to recruit Juan Soto to the New York Mets, with a few subtle jabs at Yankees star Aaron Judge along the way. As the Soto free agency heats up, Lindor personally joined the Mets’ delegation in Los Angeles to make their case, marking his commitment to bringing his friend and fellow star to Queens.
The Mets are sparing no resources, with team owner Steve Cohen spearheading the recruiting efforts, and Lindor, known for his star power and charisma, has added an extra layer of appeal.
Lindor and Soto’s friendship dates back to Soto’s days with the Washington Nationals, and Lindor has openly advocated for Soto joining him in New York. During his brief interaction with the media at LAX, Lindor kept it diplomatic, simply wishing Soto “the best decision for himself and his family.” However, his visible involvement signals a serious effort to sway Soto’s decision and raises pressure on the Yankees, who are reportedly also interested in Soto. So far, Yankees representatives—Hal Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman, and manager Aaron Boone—are expected to be present for Soto’s meetings. However, it’s unclear if Judge, who recently became Soto’s teammate, will personally attend the pitch meetings.
Lindor’s recruiting tactic highlights the Mets’ strong position as they pursue the star outfielder. Coming off an MVP-caliber season himself, Lindor is determined to build a championship roster in Queens, and Soto’s addition could be the game-changer. Judge’s possible absence from the Yankees’ recruitment efforts could give the Mets the edge, as Lindor aims to solidify his team’s future with another marquee player by his side.
As free agency unfolds, Lindor’s personal involvement may prove pivotal, potentially setting the Mets apart in the high-stakes pursuit of Soto.
