The Buffalo Bills suffered another setback on their defensive line during their 30-27 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, as defensive end sustained a significant wrist injury. Bills head coach Sean McDermott announced on Monday that Smoot will need surgery and will be placed on injured reserve, likely sidelining him for the next four months. While McDermott is hopeful for Smoot’s return later in the season, the timeline will depend on post-surgery recovery.
Smoot, who joined the Bills as a free agent this season after seven years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, had already proven to be a valuable addition, stepping into an essential role on defense. Known for his high intensity and leadership, Smoot also called the defensive plays on third downs, a contribution that Bills players and coaches highlighted as a game-changer. His versatility allowed him to play on the edge and shift inside to the tackle position, making him an asset for defensive coordinator Bobby Babich.
The injury compounds challenges for the Bills’ defense, which is also without rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter, who underwent wrist surgery two weeks ago. McDermott emphasized that with both Smoot and Carter out, other players will need to step up, potentially leading to more opportunities for defensive tackle Eli Ankou, who recently saw increased playing time, and rookie Zion Logue, whom the Bills signed from Atlanta’s practice squad.
With Smoot’s extended absence, the Bills may explore acquiring another defensive lineman. Babich indicated that replacing Smoot’s presence will require a flexible approach. For now, Buffalo’s defensive strategy will likely evolve on a week-by-week basis as they prepare for their next game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Additionally, wide receiver Keon Coleman’s injury status remains under review after sustaining a wrist/hand injury late in Sunday’s game, with updates expected soon on his availability.
