The New York Yankees, once known for their reliable bullpen, now face the task of rebuilding their late-inning lineup as they head into next season. With key relievers Clay Holmes and Tommy Kahnle both likely to leave in free agency, the Yankees are actively pursuing former All-Star right-hander Carlos Estevez as a top option to fill the gap.
According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Yankees are strongly considering Estevez, a talented power arm who split last season with the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies (h/t Mark Polishuk, MLB Trade Rumors). Estevez, 31, recorded a solid 2024 season, notching 26 saves with a 2.45 ERA, 50 strikeouts, and a 4-5 record over 55 innings.
Known for his high velocity, Estevez is coming off an impressive campaign where he ranked tenth in MLB saves and posted a 2.1 WAR, outperforming Holmes’ 0.7 WAR in the same role. Although he finished just shy of Holmes’ save tally last year, Estevez’s consistency and intensity make him a valuable candidate for the Yankees’ closing duties and an asset to their World Series aspirations.
Estevez previously signed a two-year, $13.5 million contract with the Angels in 2023, but his market value has since risen substantially. Spotrac predicts he could secure a multi-year deal worth around $69 million, making him one of the most valuable relievers in this free-agent class. The Yankees, in need of dependable bullpen options, may be ready to invest in Estevez as part of their offseason strategy to retool for 2025.
