The New York Mets have emerged victorious in a fierce bidding war with the Yankees to sign slugging first baseman Christian Walker, filling a critical gap in their lineup. Both New York teams pursued Walker after Anthony Rizzo and Pete Alonso entered free agency, leaving first base vacant for both franchises. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the Mets and Yankees were among at least six teams chasing the former Arizona Diamondbacks star.
Walker, a consistent power hitter, batted .251 with 26 home runs and 84 RBIs for the Diamondbacks last season, coming off a career-high 36 homers in 2022 and 103 RBIs in 2023. Known for his defensive skills as well as his bat, Walker is expected to secure a multi-year contract, with experts predicting he’ll earn around $60 million over three years. While MLBTradeRumors anticipates a three-year, $60 million contract, The Athletic suggests a two-year deal worth $44 million could also be on the table. His age—33, turning 34 before next season—has tempered his contract length, yet his power and glove make him an attractive asset.
In winning the battle for Walker, the Mets have not only boosted their offensive depth but also added a defensive standout who can anchor the infield. The Yankees, who declined Rizzo’s option for 2025, will now have to explore other options to fill the gap at first base. Rizzo, a fan favorite himself, expressed a deep connection with the team after the season, voicing his appreciation for his time as a Yankee but acknowledging the uncertainty of his future in pinstripes.
With Walker’s addition, the Mets are positioning themselves as serious contenders for the 2025 season. Mets fans are eager to see how this strategic signing helps their team’s playoff ambitions.
