The New York Mets find themselves at a pivotal crossroads this offseason, juggling interest in high-profile free agents like and securing long-term deals for key players. Yet, the decision with the most weight for fans is undoubtedly Pete Alonso’s future. As the team’s home-run leader and a pillar of Mets’ fandom since his 2019 debut, Alonso is the offseason’s hottest topic. Although his free agency gives him full control of his next move, a look at his rumored suitors suggests a Mets reunion may be more likely than expected.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently outlined potential landing spots if Alonso were to depart. Notably, Heyman omitted the New York Yankees, a potential threat with financial power and a hole at first base. While this could shift if the Yankees fail to secure a top target like Soto, their current absence in the Alonso chase is a win for Mets fans.
Other teams named as contenders—the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners—might offer Alonso financial incentives but have inherent drawbacks. Both Oracle Park and T-Mobile Park are notorious for their pitcher-friendly dimensions, more so than Citi Field. Alonso might hesitate to join a club where his power numbers could see a dip. Additionally, the Mariners may hesitate to outbid for Alonso if they believe they can secure other options more suited to their needs.
Also on Heyman’s list are the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies. Yet, each team has either a top first baseman or a logjam in the infield. For example, Toronto would have to move Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to third base, while Philadelphia would need to shift Bryce Harper back to the outfield. The practicality of such moves remains questionable.
In the end, while several teams could theoretically pursue Alonso, logistical hurdles make it unlikely he’d find a better fit outside New York. As Mets owner Steve Cohen pushes to build a winning roster, Alonso’s value as both a power hitter and fan favorite remains high. Assuming Alonso’s preference leans toward staying in Flushing, the Mets appear poised to be his best option. This rumored list of suitors seems to give fans reason to believe that Alonso’s home-run heroics will continue in Queens.
