Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward has captivated college football fans this season. The fifth-year senior, who transferred to Miami last offseason, has been instrumental in the Hurricanes’ remarkable transformation from last year’s 7-6 record to an impressive 9-0 start in 2024. Known for leading the top-ranked offense in the nation, Ward has emerged as the leading Heisman Trophy contender with +185 odds, according to ESPN BET. However, a recent report from former NFL draft analyst Todd McShay sheds light on the tempered views some NFL teams have regarding Ward’s pro potential.
On The McShay Show, McShay revealed that many NFL scouts have a different perspective than the current college hype. “Cam Ward’s name is everywhere in conversations about top quarterbacks, often alongside Shedeur Sanders. But when you dig into the NFL circles, more scouts are giving him second-round grades than projecting him as a lock for the first round,” McShay explained. While Ward is praised for his playmaking abilities, his NFL tape has left some teams uncertain about his transition to the pros.
Ward’s journey has been unconventional. Starting as a zero-star recruit from West Columbia, Texas, he initially played two years at Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington State and then to Miami. In his current season, he has recorded 3,146 passing yards with 29 touchdowns and six interceptions, adding 187 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
While Ward’s college performance places him in the spotlight, McShay’s remarks may serve as a reality check for the star QB as he prepares for a potential NFL future. Whether he continues to rise or faces more scrutiny, Ward’s story has captured national attention, and he remains focused on leading the Hurricanes through their undefeated season.
