After the heartbreak of losing the 2024 World Series to the Dodgers, the Yankees are already strategizing for next season. Their priority is clear—re-sign star outfielder Juan Soto. However, many believe Soto could end up signing with the Mets, and the Yankees are preparing backup options, with Astros third baseman Alex Bregman emerging as a top target.
If Soto does sign elsewhere, Bregman’s profile fits the Yankees’ needs. Erik Beaston of Bleacher Report highlights Bregman as a likely addition, especially as the Yankees look to solidify third base—a position of need after Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s limited stint there. Bregman’s current market value is estimated at $119 million over four years, although agent Scott Boras is likely aiming higher, with some insiders projecting a deal closer to $210 million.
In recent seasons with the Astros, Bregman has been consistent, posting an average slash line of .260/.349/.449, with approximately 25 homers, 32 doubles, and 89 RBIs per year. Such production could bring needed stability and power to the Yankees’ infield. However, given the history between the Yankees and Astros, some, like Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, question how Yankees fans would welcome Bregman in light of past rivalry tensions.
Ultimately, the Yankees’ focus remains on Soto. But if he signs elsewhere, Bregman could very well be their next big move to get the team back to the World Series.
