The New York Mets have announced a strategic move to strengthen their bullpen, signing right-handed reliever Dylan Covey to a three-year, $67 million deal following his free agency. The acquisition, completed just days into the offseason, brings added depth and experience to the Mets’ bullpen as Covey joins a roster aiming for a stronger showing in the 2025 season.
After two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Covey opted for free agency in search of better opportunities. During his time with the Phillies, Covey demonstrated his reliability as a reliever, appearing in 28 games with a 3.69 ERA and 27 strikeouts across 39 innings in 2023. He gained significant momentum toward a 2024 bullpen role with a remarkable 0.75 ERA and .209 opponents’ batting average in his final ten outings. However, a right shoulder injury during 2024’s spring training cut his season short, eventually leading to his reassignment to the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. There, Covey finished strong, posting a 1.20 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 15 innings.
By securing Covey, the Mets have added an experienced arm with the potential to anchor their bullpen. Covey will compete for a key role during spring training, likely filling a pivotal slot alongside Mets closer Edwin Díaz. At 33, Covey brings both experience and renewed potential to the Mets, and fans can look forward to seeing him back on a major league mound, now in New York, as he seeks to make a substantial impact in the upcoming season.
