Official 49er News: San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch Shares Latest Updates on 49ers’ Deadline Plans…

With the San Francisco 49ers sitting at a 3-4 record but still within striking distance of the NFC West lead, General Manager John Lynch and the front office are weighing their options ahead of the 2024 trade deadline. Despite a somewhat disappointing start to the season, Lynch appears poised to be aggressive, looking to bolster the roster for a playoff push.

According to Michael Silver of The Athletic, the 49ers are targeting help at defensive tackle and wide receiver. Even with future cap constraints, the team is exploring both marquee acquisitions and affordable options to address key needs. Dianna Russini of The Athletic has pointed to two potential trade targets from the New England Patriots: wide receiver Kendrick Bourne and defensive lineman Davon Godchaux. Bourne, a former 49er, would help fill the void left by Brandon Aiyuk’s season-ending injury, while Godchaux could shore up the defensive line after the loss of Javon Hargrave.

The 49ers have also reportedly considered bringing back two former players: DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts and D.J. Jones from the Denver Broncos. However, there hasn’t been strong interest reciprocated from their current teams.

Despite their shaky start, the 49ers have reasons for optimism. Christian McCaffrey is returning to boost the offense, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw will provide reinforcements on defense. The team has a history of impactful trade-deadline moves, including the additions of Chase Young, Emmanuel Sanders, and Jimmy Garoppolo in past seasons.

On the flip side, San Francisco may also consider subtracting from its roster. Cornerback Charvarius Ward, an impending free agent, is a potential trade candidate, though Deebo Samuel is expected to stay put after Aiyuk’s injury. As the deadline approaches, the 49ers are balancing their need to strengthen the team while preparing for the future.
