Legendary Alabama head coach Nick Saban has weighed in with advice for Florida State as they face a significant cultural and performance challenge. Once riding high after a 13-1 season, the Seminoles now sit at a dismal 1-6, on the brink of bowl game elimination and in need of a major rebuild.
On ESPN’s College GameDay, Saban shared his perspective on what head coach Mike Norvell should do to restore order and establish a winning culture at Florida State. Saban emphasized the importance of accountability, explaining:
“One thing that I always used, my greatest tool when trying to establish the culture, was the bench. When guys don’t do what they’re supposed to do or buy in the way they’re supposed to, you put them on the bench.”
This year, the Seminoles have struggled with leadership, as upperclassmen haven’t stepped up as in past seasons, leaving a void in the locker room. Saban’s advice is clear: Norvell must take control, bench players who aren’t performing, and give younger players a chance to step up.
Facing a tough matchup against No. 6 Miami, Norvell has the opportunity to evaluate his roster and focus on the future. By promoting younger players and giving them more responsibility, Norvell can begin reshaping the program’s culture while sending a message to upperclassmen about leadership and effort.
Saban’s advice comes from a place of experience, having won seven National Championships. Florida State’s future, and how Norvell responds in the coming months, will be critical in determining the direction of the program. Taking Saban’s advice could be the first step in a much-needed turnaround.
