The Detroit Red Wings have had a rocky start to the 2024-25 NHL season, and CEO Chris Ilitch isn’t happy about it. With the team sitting at 1-3-0 after a string of disappointing performances, Ilitch issued a stern warning to both the players and coaching staff, making it clear that early-season struggles won’t be tolerated.
The Red Wings dropped two tough games to the New York Rangers, including a 5-2 defeat last night and a 4-1 loss earlier in the week. The only bright spot so far was a 3-0 shutout victory against the Nashville Predators. However, with only four games in, the team already seems to be on shaky ground, and Ilitch has expressed his frustration.
“I know it’s early, but we expect better,” Ilitch said in a press conference on Friday. “This organization has a proud history, and our fanbase deserves to see a team that competes at the highest level every night. We’ve made significant investments in this roster, and the expectations are high.”
Ilitch’s message is a clear warning to head coach Derek Lalonde and his players, signaling that changes could be on the horizon if the team doesn’t turn things around soon. The Red Wings’ lineup has the talent, with players like Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, and Alex DeBrincat expected to lead the team back to playoff contention after years of rebuilding.
“We know what this team is capable of,” Ilitch added. “Now, it’s up to everyone in the organization to deliver. We can’t afford to fall behind this early in the season.”
With Ilitch’s strong words ringing in their ears, the Red Wings will need to regroup quickly if they want to avoid a prolonged slump and stay competitive in a tough Eastern Conference.
