The Cleveland Browns have secured a new quarterback to fill the void left by Deshaun Watson’s season-ending Achilles injury, officially signing former New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe. This move comes as Watson weighs his surgical options, leaving a significant gap in Cleveland’s offense.
Zappe, who impressed in a 2022 matchup against the Browns, will now provide stability as Cleveland navigates the rest of the season without their star quarterback. During that game, Zappe completed 71% of his passes for 309 yards, throwing two touchdowns without an interception, securing a win for the Patriots.
Throughout his NFL career, Zappe has shown potential, completing 63% of his passes for 2,053 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The Browns, now in need of quarterback depth, acted quickly by signing Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad to their active 53-man roster.

While head coach Kevin Stefanski evaluates the development of backup QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR), Zappe’s experience and past success provide Cleveland with a reliable option under center. For the Patriots, parting ways with a promising young quarterback like Zappe adds another layer to their ongoing rebuilding process.
Zappe is expected to step in and help the Browns remain competitive as they adjust to life without Watson, aiming to maintain their playoff hopes alive despite the adversity.
