Pittsburgh Steelers appear to have beaten out the Los Angeles Chargers in the pursuit of veteran wide receiver. Initially, it was reported that both the Chargers and the New Orleans Saints were vying for Williams, with the Chargers eyeing a potential reunion with their former wideout. However, the Steelers have emerged as the frontrunners.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that several teams had been inquiring about Williams, but Pittsburgh’s aggressive pursuit may have given them the edge. Rapoport noted that the Steelers have been actively seeking a top-tier receiver since their unsuccessful attempt to trade for San Francisco’s Brandon Aiyuk earlier in the offseason. With Pittsburgh facing the Jets on Sunday, Rapoport suggested that the Steelers could get a closer look at Williams in action before finalizing a deal.
While no official confirmation has been made, Pittsburgh’s interest seems more serious than that of the Chargers, who, despite initial reports, may be looking at other positions, especially considering their injury struggles on defense. The Chargers have also seen the return of DJ Chark this week and promising performances from Josh Palmer, which could shift their focus away from acquiring another wide receiver like Williams.
As trade talks continue, it’s expected that any substantive discussions between the Jets and the Steelers regarding Williams will pick up after Sunday’s game. The Chargers may still make a move for Williams, but the likelihood seems to be fading, with Pittsburgh looking more determined to land the 30-year-old star ahead of the November 5th trade deadline.
