In a surprising turn of events, the New England Patriots are reportedly reconsidering the possibility of reuniting with a prominent playmaker as the NFL trade deadline approaches. This move comes just after the Patriots debuted their rookie quarterback, Drake Maye, in his first NFL start against the Houston Texans last week. While Maye’s performance wasn’t flawless, it injected a spark of excitement into the Patriots fan base and showcased the potential of the team’s young wide receiver corps.
DeMario Douglas, in his second year, had one of the best games of his career, hauling in six receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, rookie receiver Kayshon Boutte added to the offensive effort with three receptions for 59 yards and a score. Despite these bright spots, the Patriots are still considering adding more firepower to the wide receiver group.
While New England’s 2-4 record might suggest they won’t be active buyers before the trade deadline, reports indicate that they are keeping an eye on a familiar face: former Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.
In his Week 7 notebook, ESPN’s Dan Graziano discussed the possibility of the Las Vegas Raiders continuing to offload key players after trading star wideout Davante Adams. Meyers, now the WR1 for the Raiders, could be on the move if the team doesn’t see him as part of their future plans. Meyers, who has 25 receptions for 273 yards and a touchdown this season, spent his first four NFL seasons in New England before signing a three-year, $33 million deal with Las Vegas in 2023.
While Meyers could help speed up Maye’s development, especially with his experience in the Patriots’ system, New England already has veterans like Kendrick Bourne and K.J. Osborn, plus a promising group of young receivers. Given the Patriots’ current rebuilding phase, it may not make sense to give up valuable draft capital to bring Meyers back.
Ultimately, whether the Patriots make a move will depend on their long-term vision. For now, the possibility of a Meyers reunion remains a topic of speculation, with New England considering all options as the trade deadline looms.
