On Thursday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian delivered significant news during his press conference, confirming that the Longhorns’ elite quarterback, has been dropped from the starting roster. This decision follows Ewers’ recent struggles in his return from injury, raising questions about his readiness and performance.
Ewers, who has been a key figure in Texas’ rise to the top of the rankings, showed signs of rust in the Longhorns’ Week 7 victory against No. 18 Oklahoma. Despite completing 20 of 29 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown, Ewers opened the game with an interception and several overthrows. These issues seemed to linger from his oblique injury, which had kept him out of the previous two games.
While Sarkisian acknowledged Ewers’ subpar performance, he quickly shut down any speculation regarding a potential permanent change at quarterback. When asked if Arch Manning, the highly-touted freshman, could see playing time if Ewers continues to struggle, Sarkisian dismissed the idea. “I’m not even going to answer that,” he said, clearly standing by his quarterback. “Next question.”
With the No. 1 Longhorns firing on all cylinders, Sarkisian seems intent on avoiding unnecessary distractions ahead of their high-stakes matchup with No. 5 Georgia. While Ewers had an off day against Oklahoma, his past clutch performances—like his standout games against Michigan earlier this year and Alabama last season—have solidified his place as the team’s leader under center.
Though Arch Manning’s potential remains an intriguing storyline, Sarkisian made it clear that no changes are coming unless absolutely necessary. For now, Texas will continue to rely on Ewers as they push for a national championship, with Manning waiting in the wings if the situation ever calls for it.
