The New England Patriots are facing a potential setback ahead of their upcoming game in London, as three key starters could be sidelined.
Head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that Rhamondre Stevenson (starting running back), Vederian Lowe (starting left tackle), and versatile defensive back Marcus Jones were all absent from practice on Wednesday. Stevenson, who missed last week’s game due to a foot injury, continues to recover. Lowe exited the Texans game early after being injured on a sack, while Jones played through a groin issue but has since been listed on the injury report.
If any or all of these players are unavailable for Sunday’s matchup against the Jaguars, it could be a significant blow for the Patriots, especially with their offense struggling. The absence of Lowe would likely trigger a domino effect along the offensive line. Mike Onwenu might shift to tackle, opening up a spot at right guard for rookie Layden Robinson, while Demontrey Jacobs could flip from right to left tackle.
Mayo acknowledged this possibility on Wednesday, stating, “That’s in consideration.”
New England already got a preview of life without Stevenson in last week’s loss to the Texans, where the team’s running backs struggled, averaging just 2.1 yards per carry. Without Stevenson, the offense failed to pick up a first down on the ground, with all three rushing first downs coming from quarterback Drake Maye.
Meanwhile, Marcus Jones, one of the Patriots’ best slot cornerbacks, would leave a significant gap if unavailable. The team might move Jon Jones inside and give Marco Wilson more reps at cornerback. Jones’ absence would also impact special teams, potentially leading to Pop Douglas taking over as the primary punt returner.
The Patriots will need to adjust quickly, as these losses could greatly affect their performance against Jacksonville.
