The Philadelphia Flyers started the 2024-25 season on a high note, claiming a 3-2 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. The Flyers showed resilience, coming back from two separate one-goal deficits to secure the win in an intense five-round shootout.

While the Flyers struggled to find their rhythm early on, they gradually improved as the game progressed. Stellar goaltending and a flawless penalty kill (5-for-5) kept them in the game, despite trailing 1-0 in the first period and 2-1 heading into the third.

Tyson Foerster scored his first goal of the season on the power play, while Cam York also found the back of the net to tie the game late in the third period. For Vancouver, Nils Höglander and Teddy Blueger each tallied their first goals of the season.

In the shootout, things looked grim for the Flyers when Jake DeBrusk scored for Vancouver, but Travis Konecny responded under pressure to keep Philadelphia alive. Finally, Morgan Frost delivered the game-winner in the fifth round with a low glove-side shot that sealed the victory.

The game started with a costly turnover in the Flyers’ defensive zone. Rasmus Ristolainen’s lead pass deflected off Ryan Poehling’s stick, allowing Conor Garland to set up Höglander for the game’s first goal at 12:55 of the opening period.

Philadelphia responded on their first power play of the night at 17:24. Egor Zamula initiated quick puck movement, leading to Joel Farabee setting up Foerster, who buried the shot to tie the game at 1-1. Farabee and Bobby Brink earned assists on the play.

In the second period, Vancouver regained the lead at 11:25 when Teddy Blueger deflected a shot on the backhand, with assists from Derek Forbort and Pius Suter. The Canucks’ fourth line capitalized on the Flyers’ defense, making it 2-1.

Early in the third period, the Flyers tied the game again. Cam York unleashed a heavy shot from the top of the left circle, which deflected off a defender and into the net. Initially waved off, the goal was confirmed after further review, bringing the score to 2-2 at 3:03 of the final period. Ryan Poehling and Garnet Hathaway assisted on the play.

Overtime saw the Flyers survive a tense final two minutes, during which two exhausted Flyers players were unable to change lines. The game ultimately headed to a shootout, where Morgan Frost’s clutch goal in the fifth round secured the Flyers’ season-opening win.

This thrilling victory marks a positive start for the Flyers, giving them a much-needed boost as they look to build momentum in the 2024-25 season.
