As Brewers shortstop Willy Adames enters free agency, he is expected to land a six-year contract worth $152 million, according to Aaliyan Mohammed of The Sporting News. However, Milwaukee may not be able to match such an offer, which could open the door for Adames to seek a new opportunity elsewhere.
Dodger Stadium could be the new destination for Adames. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report speculated on a potential scenario where the Dodgers might pursue Adames instead of re-signing current star outfielder Teoscar Hernández. Miller noted that if the Dodgers are faced with a choice between keeping Hernández or signing Adames, they might prioritize upgrading their middle infield.
Adames would be a great addition to the Dodgers’ lineup. He’s a strong defender, recording 204 putouts, 323 assists, and committing only 20 errors at shortstop in 2024. At the plate, he delivered 32 home runs, 112 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases, with a solid .251/.331/.462 slash line.
If the Dodgers decide to bring in Adames, he would be a solid replacement for Hernández, who hit 33 home runs, drove in 99 RBIs, and had 12 stolen bases with a .272/.339/.501 slash line. While Adames may cost the Dodgers around $2 million more per year and come with a longer commitment—compared to a projected three-year, $71 million contract for Hernández—his ability to drive in runs would be a valuable asset to the team’s lineup.
Hernández has been a key contributor for the Dodgers this season, both in the regular season and the playoffs. In the 2024 NLDS against the Padres, he recorded five hits, six RBIs, and one home run across four games. However, if the Dodgers decide that their money would be better spent strengthening the infield, Adames could be wearing Dodger Blue next season, while Hernández might move on.
Ultimately, how the Dodgers perform in this year’s postseason could heavily influence their decision in the offseason. A deep playoff run might make re-signing Hernández more appealing, but a shift in strategy could lead to Adames joining the team as a major infield upgrade.
