Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery has finally spoken out about the roster decisions made for the upcoming season, and the announcements have shocked many who followed the team’s preseason journey. After weeks of intense training camps and evaluation, the Bruins have locked in their opening-night roster, but not without a few surprises.
With a strong offseason focus on becoming bigger, tougher, and more physical, the Bruins have emphasized strengthening their forward lines. However, it wasn’t the highly anticipated prospects like Fabian Lysell and Georgii Merkulov who seized the moment, but instead a group of unexpected players who earned their spots.
Among those securing a role are Max Jones, Mark Kastelic, Cole Koepke, and Riley Tufte, each of whom stood out in training camp and forced Montgomery’s hand in selecting them. Meanwhile, veteran forward Tyler Johnson, who signed a professional tryout (PTO) with the Bruins this offseason, remains in limbo. Montgomery offered little clarity on Johnson’s future with the team, saying only that Johnson was “not with the team” and did not have an update beyond that. This leaves his status uncertain as the Bruins inch closer to their season opener.
Adding to the roster intrigue, Matthew Poitras, another forward expected to compete for a spot, is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. Should his condition remain unclear, it could open the door for Johnson or another player to find their way onto the roster.
With the forward lines mostly set, the last remaining question for Montgomery is who will get the start in net when the Bruins face off against the Florida Panthers on opening night. While both Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark had impressive showings last season, Montgomery has yet to announce who will get the nod between the pipes, saying that decision will come closer to game time.
