Former Seattle Mariners catcher and team advisor Dan Wilson has officially confirmed that seven-time All-Star José Altuve will join the Mariners. The 34-year-old veteran second baseman, who has spent his entire MLB career with the Houston Astros, is now set to bolster Seattle’s roster ahead of the 2024 season.
Altuve’s move to the Mariners is a shocking development, as he has been known for his success with the Astros. Though primarily a middle infielder, Altuve’s leadership and experience are expected to provide a significant boost to the Mariners, who are looking to improve their chances in the competitive AL West.
Dan Wilson, who remains closely connected to the Mariners organization, expressed his excitement about the acquisition. “Adding someone like José Altuve is a game-changer for us,” Wilson said. “His championship pedigree and experience will not only enhance our infield but also bring invaluable leadership to the entire team.”
Altuve’s versatility as a player means that while he is traditionally known for his role at second base, his presence could also indirectly impact the bullpen by providing stronger overall team defense, thus alleviating some of the pressure on Seattle’s relievers.
For the Mariners, this move signals their intent to compete at the highest level in 2024, as they aim to return to the postseason. Altuve’s arrival in Seattle marks the beginning of a new chapter for the veteran star, as he looks to lead the Mariners to a successful season.
