The Vancouver Canucks, considered strong contenders for the 2025 Stanley Cup, have reached a mutual agreement to sign a $23 million deal with experienced veteran Nils Höglander. Just days before their season opener on October 9, the Canucks locked up the talented 23-year-old winger, securing him with a three-year extension. Höglander’s new contract will carry a $3 million annual cap hit, starting in the 2025-26 season, an upgrade from his current $1.1 million cap hit.
Höglander had a breakout season last year, achieving career highs with 24 goals, 36 points, and an impressive plus-23 rating, all while averaging just 12:06 of ice time per game. His positive impact on the ice contributed to Vancouver’s first playoff appearance since 2019-20, positioning him as a crucial asset moving forward.
With Vancouver’s current lack of depth at wing, Höglander’s role could expand significantly, potentially earning him a spot in the top six. If he continues to develop at his current pace, this new contract could prove to be a bargain for the Canucks in the long term.
Selected in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Höglander has already played 221 games for Vancouver, and with this new deal, the question now becomes: can the young Swede step up to become a true star for the Canucks? Only time will tell as Vancouver sets its sights on the 2025 Stanley Cup.
