The Seattle Mariners are emerging as serious contenders to sign one of the top power hitters in this year’s MLB free agent market, according to recent rumors.
Despite a promising start to the 2024 season, the Mariners fell short of the playoffs after leading the American League West for much of the first half. The team struggled in the final months, leaving fans disappointed by a season that had initially shown so much potential.
As the Mariners head into the offseason, they boast a talented and youthful pitching staff. However, their underperforming batting order ultimately cost them a playoff spot. Addressing the offensive issues is expected to be a top priority for the front office, and they are rumored to be eyeing a major addition.
A new report suggests the Mariners are seen as a serious contender to sign one of the most powerful bats in free agency this winter.
Mariners Emerging as a Favorite to Sign Pete Alonso
“If All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso doesn’t return to the Mets, rival executives believe he will wind up in Seattle or with the Cubs,” according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Alonso, a four-time All-Star, is set to turn 30 this December and has established himself as one of baseball’s premier power hitters. Throughout his six-year career with the New York Mets, Alonso has consistently delivered, hitting 30 or more home runs in every season except one, which was during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. His career includes two 40-home-run seasons and an impressive 50-homer rookie campaign.
With Alonso potentially leaving the Mets after contract extension talks stalled over the last year, there is growing speculation that the team may prioritize pursuing other free agents like Juan Soto or Corbin Burnes. They may also focus on retaining pitchers Luis Severino and Sean Manaea.
For the Mariners, landing Alonso would be a significant move, potentially revitalizing their offense and positioning them for a stronger 2025 campaign. If the deal goes through, Alonso’s power at the plate could provide the boost Seattle needs to contend in the highly competitive AL West.
