The Atlanta Braves are facing several important decisions this offseason, and they’ve already made it clear that three of those choices are straightforward. According to a report by MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, the Braves plan to pick up the contract options for Marcell Ozuna, Travis d’Arnaud, and Aaron Bummer.
However, the Braves are dealing with a bit of a logjam at the designated hitter position, largely due to uncertainty surrounding Ronald Acuña Jr.’s future. Acuña is recovering from his second ACL surgery, and it remains unclear if he’ll be fit enough to return to the outfield in 2025. This uncertainty complicates things, especially with Jorge Soler also being more suited for a DH role, despite playing right field last season. Soler is under contract for two more years, making it uncertain whether both he and Ozuna will be on the Opening Day roster next year.
Aaron Bummer’s option was also an easy decision for the Braves. While his 3.68 ERA this season might not stand out, his 2.23 FIP indicates he was hindered by some bad luck. Bummer’s ability to strike out 11.2 batters per nine innings and his strong performance in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series have solidified his spot on the roster for at least another season.

Travis d’Arnaud is also returning and will likely continue to platoon with Sean Murphy behind the plate. Murphy struggled after an oblique strain on Opening Day, and d’Arnaud was more effective in various aspects of the game upon Murphy’s return. Additionally, d’Arnaud’s leadership in the clubhouse remains invaluable to the team.
There has been speculation that d’Arnaud could potentially replace manager Brian Snitker when he eventually steps down, but for now, that’s a conversation for the future. Snitker has confirmed his intention to return for at least one more season, and d’Arnaud still has plenty left to offer as a player.
The Braves’ offseason moves are just beginning, but these decisions signal their commitment to keeping key pieces in place while navigating the uncertainty surrounding their roster.
