The Chicago Blackhawks have made a controversial yet strategic decision to send two of their top prospects, Kevin Korchinski and Frank Nazar, to begin the season with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs. While some fans may be disappointed to see these young stars sent down, the move is part of a larger plan to ensure their long-term development.
Head coach Luke Richardson explained the reasoning behind the decision. For Frank Nazar, the team envisions him as a future top-six forward. Richardson emphasized that having Nazar play limited minutes on the fourth line or being a healthy scratch in Chicago would hinder his progress.

Nazar’s preseason performance wasn’t strong enough to secure an opening night roster spot, so the IceHogs will provide him with the ice time and opportunity to develop his game into that of a solid second-line center. The Blackhawks are avoiding the mistake they made with Lukas Reichel last year, when he was rushed into a similar role prematurely.
Kevin Korchinski, who played 76 games as a 19-year-old rookie last season, will also start the season in Rockford. Despite his promising stint in Chicago, Korchinski struggled during the preseason, making it clear that more development is needed. Last year, the team couldn’t send him to the AHL due to his age, but now that he’s eligible, they believe valuable time in Rockford will help him refine his game.
Korchinski showed flashes of brilliance last season, but his rookie mistakes and reluctance to shoot the puck indicate that he has room for improvement.

With increased depth on both the forward and defensive lines this season, the Blackhawks have the luxury of being patient with Korchinski and Nazar. The coaching staff is confident that the extra time in Rockford will benefit their growth, just as it has for other players like Alex Vlasic and Wyatt Kaiser.
While some may view this decision as a setback, it’s a calculated move aimed at ensuring both players are fully ready to make a lasting impact in the NHL.
