The Boston Red Sox are looking to bolster their starting rotation this offseason, and they may have found a potential trade partner in their top rivals, the Chicago White Sox. According to MLB insiders, including Bob Nightengale and Jon Heyman, the Red Sox could land White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet, a 25-year-old All-Star, in a deal that could address both teams’ needs.
The White Sox, struggling after a poor season, reportedly debated trading Crochet at the deadline but chose to hold onto him. Crochet posted a solid 3.58 ERA, with 209 strikeouts and 33 walks over 146 innings, despite being part of a Chicago team that suffered from one of the league’s worst offenses. Now, as the White Sox are looking to rebuild, they appear more open to dealing their young star.
For Boston, acquiring a pitcher like Crochet would be a significant move. The Red Sox are in need of quality arms, and with a minor league system rich in position players but lacking near-MLB-ready pitching prospects, they may have the assets to make a trade. However, the Red Sox will need to act quickly if they don’t want to face steep competition in a rapidly rising pitching market.

There’s concern, though, about how far Boston is willing to go, as the team has been reluctant to overspend or make risky trades in recent years. At the trade deadline, teams demanded top prospects like Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony for relievers, deals the Red Sox wisely passed on. But with pitchers like Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell seeking massive contracts, Boston will need to make a strategic move if they want to land Crochet without giving up too much of their future talent.
If the Red Sox can pull off the deal, Crochet would bring high upside to a rotation that is looking to turn a corner in 2024.
