The Milwaukee Brewers are facing elimination after a tough 8-4 loss to the New York Mets in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card series on Tuesday. With their season on the line, Brewers manager Pat Murphy has announced that Frankie Montas will start Game 2 on Wednesday.
Montas brings playoff experience, though his postseason track record is mixed. In three playoff appearances for the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees, including one start, Montas has allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits, striking out six over 6.2 innings. However, most of that damage came in a 2020 outing where he gave up five runs in a loss to the Houston Astros.
Montas’ recent form hasn’t been sharp. In September, he struggled with a 1-2 record and a 5.55 ERA across five appearances. His last two outings were particularly rough, giving up nine earned runs, including four home runs, in just 6.2 innings. However, Montas did show some promise in his most recent start against the Mets on September 27, where he allowed just two earned runs on two hits in a Brewers’ 8-4 victory.
For the 2024 season, Montas posted a 7-11 record with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.367 WHIP. Acquired at the trade deadline from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Jake Junis, Joey Wiemer, and cash, Montas will need to deliver a standout performance to keep Milwaukee’s postseason hopes alive.
With the Brewers’ season hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on Montas as he takes the mound for this crucial Game 2.
