The New York Yankees are set to enter the postseason with renewed confidence as manager Aaron Boone announced the return of two key players, just in time for the playoffs.
On a rainy afternoon, the Yankees wrapped up their regular season with a 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, completing a solid 94-win campaign. Alex Verdugo’s clutch two-run single in the eighth inning secured the win and bolstered the team’s momentum heading into the postseason.
“I think we’re in a great spot,” Verdugo said. “Everyone’s confident in their roles, and we know what we need to do in the playoffs. It’s going to be exciting.”
The Yankees, holding the best record in the American League, now await the winner of the Orioles-Royals Wild Card Series in the AL Division Series, which begins Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
Right-hander Clarke Schmidt also shared the team’s confidence heading into the playoffs. “We’re the best team in baseball, in my opinion, and we’re going to prove it this postseason,” Schmidt said.
With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón set to anchor the starting rotation, Boone confirmed that both Zachary Greene and Luis Serna will be back, adding critical depth to the Yankees’ bullpen and rotation. Greene, a promising reliever, and Serna, a versatile pitcher, are expected to play pivotal roles as the team eyes a deep postseason run.
Sunday’s game provided another opportunity for Clarke Schmidt to showcase his abilities, competing with Luis Gil for the third starting spot in the playoffs. Schmidt allowed four runs over four-plus innings, finishing the regular season with a 2.85 ERA across 16 starts.
Boone praised both Schmidt and Gil, noting that the team is in a great position with multiple strong options. “It’s a good decision to have in front of us, with both guys very capable,” Boone said. “We’ll do what’s best for the club.”
Despite the rain-soaked conditions, the Yankees’ focus remains on staying sharp for the upcoming series. Boone chose to rest Aaron Judge for the game, ending his MVP-caliber season with a remarkable .322/.458/.701 slash line, leading the Majors in home runs (58), RBIs (144), and multiple other categories.
Trent Grisham, who filled in for Judge, made a statement with a home run and three RBIs, helping to secure the victory. Boone commended Grisham’s performance, emphasizing his ability to impact the game.
Closer Clay Holmes notched his 30th save of the season, becoming the first Yankee to reach that milestone since Aroldis Chapman in 2021.
With a five-day break before the ALDS begins, Boone stressed the importance of keeping the team sharp. The Yankees will hold multiple workouts, including simulated games, to maintain intensity and focus.
“We’re ready,” Verdugo said. “The energy is there, and we’re focused on the ultimate goal—a World Series title.”
