It’s been an eventful weekend for Vancouver Canucks prospect Vilmer Alriksson, who has not only made headlines with his strong performances but also secured a brand new contract. The 19-year-old forward, who impressed during the Canucks’ 2024 Young Stars Tournament in Penticton, finished tied as the scoring leader and helped the team to a perfect 3-0 record. Now, he’s locked in with a four-year, $19 million deal.
Alriksson’s standout showing at training camp solidified his value to the team, though he was one of the roster cuts announced on Sunday, which will send him back to the OHL’s Guelph Storm. Despite this, the contract represents a major vote of confidence from the Canucks’ management, ensuring Alriksson will continue to develop within the organization’s system.
GM Patrik Allvin’s Comments
General Manager Patrik Allvin spoke highly of Alriksson, stating: “Vilmer had a solid training camp and continues to develop and improve. We really like his size, skating ability, and skillset. We’ll keep working with him to help him get ready for the next step in his hockey career.”
Even with his impressive training camp and new contract, Alriksson was considered a longshot to make the Canucks’ opening night roster against the Calgary Flames. As expected, the team decided to send him back to the Guelph Storm for further development.
Alriksson Ready for the Next Step
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, Alriksson heads back to the OHL with high expectations. Last season, he recorded 33 points (17 goals, 16 assists) in 67 games, showcasing his offensive talent and physical presence. Now, with the added experience from Canucks training camp and a new contract under his belt, the 6-foot-6, 234-pound forward will be looking to take his game to the next level in 2024-25.
Alriksson is known for his strong skating, ability to find open ice, and a lethal shot, particularly in tight spaces. Combined with his physicality and coachability, Canucks fans will be eager to see how his game evolves over the coming months as he works towards becoming a regular in the NHL.
