It’s official: the San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement to trade for a premier pass rusher with 58 career sacks, Haason Reddick, who has been holding out for a new contract extension with the New York Jets.
Reddick, who was originally traded to the Jets by the Philadelphia Eagles back in March, has been a no-show at the Jets’ Florham Park facility. Now, with three forfeited game checks, it’s clear his holdout is serious, with both sides unable to reach an extension.
According to ESPN’s NFL Insider Dan Graziano, it appears the Jets are now more inclined to trade Reddick than sign him to a long-term contract. This move seems increasingly likely as Week 3 of the NFL season unfolds, with Reddick potentially landing with a Super Bowl contender like the San Francisco 49ers.
Could San Francisco Be Reddick’s Next Home?
The 49ers, led by general manager John Lynch, are known for their aggressive approach to roster upgrades, particularly at the trade deadline. Last season, they traded for former top-five pick Chase Young to strengthen their pass rush, a move that proved they’re not afraid to take risks in pursuit of a championship.
Graziano highlights several teams, including the 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Chicago Bears, as potential landing spots for Reddick.
“The Jets need to find a solution,” Graziano wrote for ESPN. “Either they sign Reddick to a deal that gets him back on the field, or they trade him for assets to strengthen their edge rush. At this point, the latter option seems more likely.”
Bringing in Reddick to complement star defensive end Nick Bosa could create one of the league’s most formidable pass-rushing tandems, adding even more firepower to an already championship-caliber defense.
Though some might consider Reddick a luxury addition to a stacked 49ers roster, Lynch’s willingness to be bold, coupled with the team’s drive to win a Super Bowl before quarterback Brock Purdy’s expected contract extension, might push them to pursue Reddick aggressively in the coming weeks.
