In a major blow to the Indiana Fever, star guard Caitlin Clark has been ruled out ahead of their crucial WNBA playoff series. The Fever, who finished the regular season with a 20-20 record, secured the No. 6 seed in the standings, but they now face the daunting task of taking on the No. 3 seed Connecticut Sun without one of their key players.
Clark, who averaged an impressive 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and a league-leading 8.4 assists per game during the regular season, has been instrumental in the Fever’s success. Her absence is a major setback for Indiana as they prepare to open their Best-of-3 series against the Sun on Sunday, Sept. 22. The team hopes to rally without her, but the loss of Clark, one of the league’s brightest stars, complicates their path to a deep playoff run.
Head coach Christie Sides expressed disappointment over the injury, acknowledging the uphill battle the team now faces. “Caitlin is a crucial part of our squad, and we’ll definitely feel her absence. But we have to stay focused and fight hard,” Sides said.
With Clark sidelined, the pressure increases on fellow star Kelsey Mitchell, who finished the season with 767 points, the second-most in Fever history. Mitchell is recovering from an injury sustained in the regular season finale against the Washington Mystics, but she is expected to suit up for Game 1.
The Fever split their season series with the Sun, going 1-3, but their recent 84-80 win against Connecticut provides a glimmer of hope. If the Fever can force a Game 3, they would return home to Indiana on Sept. 27. The winner of this series will advance to face either the Minnesota Lynx or the Phoenix Mercury in the Best-of-5 semifinals.
