The Pittsburgh Penguins have officially announced the re-signing of their iconic Star to a two-year contract extension. The deal, which was confirmed by general manager Kyle Dubas on Monday, will take effect next season and will carry an average annual value (AAV) of $8.7 million, totaling $16.8 million over the contract’s three-year duration.
This extension will keep Crosby with the Penguins through the 2026-27 season. Despite still being one of the top players in the NHL, Crosby continues his long-standing tradition of having a cap hit that matches his famous jersey number, 87. Crosby has maintained this $8.7 million cap hit since signing his first post-entry-level contract back in 2008, including his current 12-year, $104.4 million deal that expires after this season.
“There are no words to properly describe what Sidney Crosby means to the game of hockey, to the city of Pittsburgh, and to the Penguins organization,” said Dubas in a statement. “Sidney is the greatest player of his generation and one of the greatest in hockey history. His actions today demonstrate why he is one of the sport’s greatest leaders and winners. Sidney continues to make personal sacrifices to help the Penguins win, both now and in the future, as he has done throughout his remarkable career.”
Even at 37 years old, Crosby remains a transformative force on the ice. Over the last two seasons, while the Penguins have experienced fluctuating success, Crosby has consistently delivered top-tier performances. He reached the 90-point milestone in each of the past two campaigns, including a 42-goal season in 2023-24—his highest goal tally in seven years.
Crosby’s impact on the Penguins and the sport is undeniable. He took a struggling franchise and, within just four years of his NHL debut, led them to a Stanley Cup. As captain, he has won three Stanley Cups (2009, 2016, 2017) and has led Pittsburgh to the playoffs in 15 of his 19 seasons.

In his 1,272 career NHL games, Crosby has recorded 592 goals and 1,004 assists for a total of 1,596 points. He ranks 10th on the NHL’s all-time points list and is the only player other than Wayne Gretzky to average a point per game across 19 seasons. Additionally, Crosby has tallied 201 playoff points, ranking fifth in NHL history.
Crosby is also a member of the prestigious Quadruple Gold Club, having won the Stanley Cup, Olympic gold medals (2010, 2014), the IIHF World Championship (2015), and the World Cup of Hockey (2016).
With this extension, Crosby remains the cornerstone of the Penguins as they aim to continue their legacy of success in the NHL.
