As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for Week 2 against the Denver Broncos, the team has made significant roster changes, including the signing of a $65 million experienced veteran to strengthen their lineup. The move comes after a gritty 18-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, where the Steelers managed to secure the win without scoring a single touchdown.
In addition to the major signing, the Steelers have also added former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Shaquan Davis to their practice squad, while releasing linebacker Marcus Haynes in a corresponding move. Davis, who originally joined the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2023, brings fresh talent to the Steelers’ receiving corps, which currently lacks depth and experience behind star wideout George Pickens.
Pickens, the team’s primary target, recorded only two catches for eight yards against the Falcons, while rookie Roman Wilson remains sidelined with an ankle injury. With Wilson’s status still uncertain, Davis has an opportunity to work his way onto the Steelers’ 53-man roster alongside receivers Quez Watkins, Ben Skowronek, and Brandon Johnson.
The upcoming Week 2 matchup against the Denver Broncos was initially expected to feature the return of quarterback Russell Wilson. However, backup quarterback Justin Fields, who started against the Falcons, will once again lead the Steelers.
Davis, a standout at South Carolina State, finished his collegiate career with 934 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, showcasing his potential to make an impact at the professional level. In 2022, he recorded 23 receptions for 546 yards and five touchdowns.
The Steelers’ recent moves, highlighted by the high-profile signing and the addition of Davis, demonstrate the team’s commitment to improving its roster as they continue their season.
