The Philadelphia Phillies have placed All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm on the 10-day injured list following a left hand strain sustained during a game against the Atlanta Braves on August 29.
Bohm, 28, initially hoped for a quick recovery, staying with the team despite the injury. However, as his condition failed to improve, the Phillies made the decision to remove him from the active roster.
“They gave me as much time as they could without an extra man on the bench,” Bohm said on Friday. “But I didn’t want to hold the team back by being unable to play. We’re already short on the bench, and if something happens, we could be in trouble.”
Bohm had participated in defensive drills and took dry swings as recently as Thursday, as the Phillies began their series against the Miami Marlins. However, his inability to progress to full batting signaled that he wasn’t ready to return.
“If I can’t swing the bat, there’s really no point,” Bohm added. “It reached a point where I just couldn’t do it.”
This isn’t Bohm’s first encounter with a hand injury—he experienced similar pain in 2021, sidelining him for 16 days. Describing the discomfort, he compared it to the sensation of being struck with a hammer.
“We’ll focus on strengthening it and doing what we can without causing more pain,” Bohm said. “I’ll give it time to rest and recover, and be ready when I’m good to go.”
Before the injury, Bohm was enjoying an impressive season, contributing to the Phillies’ eight-game lead in the NL East. He boasts a .290 batting average, with 89 RBIs, tying him for fifth in the National League alongside teammate Kyle Schwarber. His strong performance also earned him a spot as the starting third baseman for the National League in this year’s All-Star Game.
