As Sidney Crosby approaches the final season of his massive 12-year, $104.4 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, fans and analysts alike are waiting for news on whether the franchise icon will sign an extension. While eligible to sign a new deal as of July 1, 2024, Crosby has yet to commit to an extension, despite multiple offers from the Penguins.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently discussed Crosby’s situation on the “32 Thoughts” podcast, revealing that the hesitation isn’t about money or a desire to leave Pittsburgh. Instead, Crosby is carefully considering the future direction of the team before making his decision.
Pittsburgh is in the midst of a retooling phase, and Crosby is reportedly weighing whether he wants to spend the final years of his career on a team that may not be immediate contenders for the playoffs. As Friedman explained, “Crosby is a guy who takes his time with decisions… He’s not being pressured by the Penguins, and they’ve given him multiple term offers to consider.”
What Will Crosby Do: Stay or Move On?
Although the lack of a decision is causing some unease among Penguins fans, Friedman believes Crosby will ultimately stay in Pittsburgh. The 37-year-old veteran is in no rush to make a decision, and it seems he may want to see how the team performs early in the season before committing.
Some analysts, like TSN’s Travis Yost, have speculated that if the Penguins struggle to contend, Crosby could potentially be traded at the deadline, only to re-sign with Pittsburgh next summer. While the idea of Crosby wearing another jersey seems far-fetched, the NHL has seen franchise players leave their longtime teams in recent years. With the Penguins just missing the playoffs last season, Crosby’s decision will be pivotal for the team’s future and their hopes of returning to contention.
For now, Crosby remains patient, taking his time to weigh his options as the Penguins navigate this critical moment in their rebuild.
