The Boston Bruins are facing a critical moment as they have yet to secure a contract with goaltender Jeremy Swayman, raising concerns about their goalie situation with training camp approaching. Swayman remains unsigned, and according to a recent report by Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic (published September 6), he won’t be allowed to participate in team activities unless a deal is reached.
An anonymous NHL general manager mentioned Swayman’s leverage in negotiations, emphasizing the Bruins’ need to sign him to a substantial contract. Swayman is expected to be Boston’s primary goalie, but the ongoing contract impasse could leave the team relying on Joonas Korpisalo, who posted a disappointing .890 save percentage last season, or 26-year-old Brandon Bussi, who has no NHL experience.
The Bruins’ lack of reliable backup options is adding pressure on general manager Don Sweeney to finalize a deal. Swayman was a standout in the 2023–24 playoffs, recording a stellar .933 save percentage, the highest among goaltenders with at least three starts. However, the current situation stems from Boston opting for a one-year, $3.475 million contract after arbitration last season, leaving the team in this precarious position as negotiations continue.
The standoff continues, and the Bruins reportedly haven’t contacted Swayman for three weeks, intensifying concerns as the season approaches.
